Spitz’s Incoherent Rambles: Social Drama Around Video Games

October 17, 2014

While there is a good deal of frustration to be had in the medium simply from video games not ending up what you were hoping they would be after following their development up until their release, those games, and those types of frustrations very often take a back seat to any number of controversies and outcry from video game news and social media.
Whether it’s violence or sexism or whatever else, it is increasingly more and more difficult to interact with the video game community without encountering said controversy.
It’s one of those things that makes you wonder “has it always been like this, and I was just too young, or wasn’t the world connected enough at the time for me to realize?”
The truth of the matter isn’t that the focus of the controversies is what irritates me so much, it’s that the vast majority of them are entirely senseless.
Video games, the things I have loved since I was a kid, have grown in a huge way, but this just means that more of the wrong kinds of people are connected to them through social or news media, and what we get from that are a bunch of stories focused on removing the joy and the escapism one gets from playing a video game, and instead seemingly intend to have video game fans, and everyone else connected to the medium, tearing one another’s throats out.

When I think of what video games mean to me today, there’s a lot of frustration that goes along with the medium, but the truth is that very little of that has to do with the video games themselves.
I’m a simple-minded person. It is both one of my best and one of my worst traits.
I don’t care if a kind of crappy-looking top down isometric shooter is socially insensitive or if a foreign game about shooting hearts at a cast of only female characters is sexist.
If a game is fun to play, I want to play it. If a game is not fun to play, I don’t.
At the end of the day, I don’t care what the context for the game is, or what it’s doing to piss off those whose sole purpose in life appears to find controversy in the things that matter the least in the grand scheme of things.
I just want to play the damned game. 256653 bike_shorts futaba_anzu meito the_idolm@ster the_idolm@ster_cinderella_girls
